Thomas Boakes died from wounds on 24th December, 1914, after having been sent to a base hospital on the coast, but as yet there is no information as to when and where he was wounded. The 1st Cornwall Light Infantry battalion was part of 14 Brigade, 5th Division, that had been in the front line facing La Petite Douve Farm in Belgium, throughout December, 1914. Here, heavy rain had made trenches awful and with the enemy lines 130 yards away and on a small rise, the water flowed down from there into the British trenches. To add to their miseries they had to contend with both artillery and sniper fire.
